Are You Fucking Kidding Me?

The following texts and images were put together for a presentation I made as part of Forced Entertainment's 'Peachy Coochy Afternoon', held on Saturday 15th November 2008 at the Riverside Studios in London. 10 people made presentations within the frame of Peachy Coochy: a carefully measured framework for delivering thoughts and visual information. Presenters select 20 images - each of which is shown for precisely 20 seconds - and accompany these with a spoken text, in this case thoughts on 'The Heart Of Performance'.

This Peachy Coochy is called Are You Fucking Kidding Me? I want to talk about Shock, Spectacle and the misplaced idea that contemporary artists are so damn wild, so damn cool.

I’ve been wondering if we’re not just kidding ourselves, either from our comfy seats or in our onstage ‘we take risks’ rhetoric. What does it take to make truly radical work, that builds on the past, and that opens up genuinely new spaces?

In the Roman Arena a highly crafted skill was to severe an opponent's head and have it land so precisely it would form the dot of the 'i' in the word 'Caligula', written in blood in the sand.

Elite (noun): A small group of people within a larger group who have more power, social standing, wealth, or talent than the rest of the group.

The proudly masturbating Emperor Tiberius would shoot his sperm down upon the heads of sex-crazed spectators sat around and beneath him in the amphitheatre.

Belonging to an elite, especially in being more talented, or highly trained than the rest, with a membership that is restricted, especially to the rich or privileged.

A mock attack aimed at drawing enemy attention and troops away from the place of the intended main attack.

Heliogabalus was one of the most reviled Roman emperors to early historians. Edward Gibbon wrote that he "abandoned himself to the grossest pleasures and is branded in history above all others" because of his "unspeakably disgusting life.” Apparently the Emperor’s effeminacy was proof he was unfit to rule.

The Romans were quick to realise the political potential of the munera. By sponsoring the games ambitious nobles could solicit votes. There was only one problem: the games were still associated with funerals. Thus, it was only a question of time before the games became secularised.

Distraction (noun):

1 - Something that interferes with concentration or takes attention away from something else.

The Roman games had other uses. They were still good PR. Moreover, one must not overlook the fact that these spectacles were an important stimulus for the economy. There were also certain "diplomatic" merits.

3 - A state of great mental or emotional upset.

performance evaluation,

שלום לכולם (אני מזכיר לכם בבקשה לתת לי איזה סימן שאתם קוראים - למטרות מעקב פרטיות שלי, אבל זה לא חובה...)

היום, נעבור מיד לאנגלית, ואני אכתוב לכם את הביקורת המודפסת שקיבלתי על ההופעה הראשונה שעשיתי (נחמד לראות מה מודדים פה ואיך הם שיטתיים בנוגע לביקורת בונה וכולי - אני לא אומר שזה טוב, פשוט זה מעניין לראות איך עושים זאת פה) אז בבקשה:

research and development

As far as I gather, the preparation was intuitive as it was synthesis in performance. While this made for interesting results, I do feel you could do more than simply feel settled with a habitual approach (יעני להגיד שחיפפתי בצורה יפה, והאמת שיש להופעות שלי רושם כזה, למרות שהם ממש ממש לא מחופפות...). Shows a wide-ranging and physical curiosity.

skills and techniques

While choices had clearly been made, and the performance made its way through a number of quite different stages very concisely, it was not best served by slight over casualness (שוב פעם התייחסות לאווריה הרגועה) . It wasnt clear how much the friend on the laptop was audience or player (גם לי זה לא היה ברור, אבל מה הבעיה עם לשים דברים לא ברורים בהופעה??), and though this neednt completly resolve, it felt like an afterthought. casualness can be (and sometimes was) very effective. but we should clearly receive the information.

innovation and originality

this was stimulating and intriguing work. I would be very interested to see how it might develop into something sustained, with this kind of switching of subject and of mode. The range of ways in which the audience 's attention was played with - gesture, informal language, word play, rather challenging expressions, image and its description- was well negotiated.

Reflective practice

the performance had a sophistication that seemed to show awareness of some art-historical context. the presentational mode was clearly considered, both serious and humorous. with the suggestion i make above, both to do the wanting a little more self- consciousness, this could be a potentially rich practice.

רדיו רדיו רדיו

שלום לכולם (אם יש שם מישהוא בכלל - אשמח לאיזה אות קטן שאתם קוראים, איזה תגובה או שתשלחו לו מייל עם הכותרת- אל תדאג- יש שם מישהוא)

רדיו ופרפורמנס ארט - או רדיו ופיסול הולכים מצוין ביחד.

לפני שנתיים כתבתי הצעה לקול קורא שהסתובב בנושא כתב עת מסוים - הצעות לנושאים לISSUE של עורך חיצוני.
כתבתי להם הצעה מקסימה שנדחתה על רדיו ואמנות. מכ"ט בנובמבר עם הדימוי של עםישראל יושב צמוד למשדרי הרדיו, דרך אייבי נתן והVOICE IF PIECE ועד לתחיה המחודשת של מדיום הרדיו בעידן הPODCASTING והאינטרנט (הכותרת למגזין הייתה RADIO KILLED THE VIDEO STAR), אניוואי, I AM INTO RADIO FOR A LONG TIME.

ומהיום, גם מבצע משרת התנדבות, פעם בשבוע ברדיו הלונדוני RESONANCE FM , הולך להיוץ מטורף - שבוע שעבר התארחו ברדיו כוכבת סרטיו של הבימאי האיראני קיורוסטאמי ואמן הקומיקס הנודע ART SPIGELMAN, שכידוע כתב את MAUS- בכל מקרה- צפויה התפתחות תרבותית מרשימה מצידי

ובכל מקרה, אני עובד על הופעה מיוחדת של פרפורמנס לרדיו (בהמשך לאקסספירימנטים שעשיתי עם חברים ב106 פמ בתל אביב) ובהזדמנות זאת גם מצרף עבודת פיסול שיצרתי לרדיו לפני כמה שנים, אז בנתיים זאת הקדמה, ונראה מה יהיה בהמשך

תיק תד"ל בצבע חאקי

שדרן

אולפן רדיו בעל שולחן עץ כבד

השדרן נכנס לאולפן אוחז בתיק בידו מתיישב בכסא ומחכה לאות מהטכנאי להתחיל את השידור (מיד אחרי החדשות)

אנד.... גו!

"שלום לכולם, בשעה הקרובה נשדר לכם את עבודת הפיסול של דניאל יהל. העבודה מוקדשת לג'ולייטה מסינה, האישה הכי יפה בעולם..."

השדרן מוציא מטיל אחד מהתיק (אנחה קטנה), ומניח על השולחן לידו (קול עמום במפגש בין המטיל לשולחן).
